For Cold Plasma, When It Came to Proving their Product’s Validity, Not Seeing Was Believing

For Cold Plasma, When It Came to Proving their Product’s Validity, Not Seeing Was Believing

Nov. 12, 2020“The Canadian government requires that all cannabis sold legally be nearly devoid of microbes, which can  generally be achieved only through sterilization. But the nature of cannabis itself makes this difficult – it is extremely sensitive to heat and to radiation (currently gamma radiation is frequently used to sterilize it). Because of this, sterilizing the plant means running the risk of damaging its properties.”

Dr. Florina Truica came up with the idea of using cold plasma technology for sterilization and came to the ARC for help. “ARC’s analysis of the treated cannabis showed that their process left it unchanged in terms of its cannabinoids, the drug’s active ingredients, and terpenes, the aromatic compounds that give it much of its distinctive aroma. All while destroying up to 99.99 per cent of the yeast, mould and bacteria on its surface.”

In particular, it will aim to pair international students who have been living in Canada for at least a year, with seniors who are home providers.

The objective is to address housing availability and affordability issues while exploring the potential to improve both students’ and seniors’ quality of life by reducing isolation and increasing their sense of belonging.

Dazed and Confused About the Benefits of CBD? You’re not Alone.

Dazed and Confused About the Benefits of CBD? You’re not Alone.

Jan. 8, 2020 – The number of products advertised as containing CBD, a compound derived from cannabis plants, has skyrocketed. Consumers can purchase CBD-infused burgers, coffee, beer, and toothpaste, as well as creams and oils marketed as treatments for pain, anxiety, and even cancer.

But what, if anything, do these products do? And are they safe? And do they even contain CBD? The research into these questions is scant.

Now, researchers at Northeastern University and Loyalist College in Ontario, Canada are teaming up to train graduate students in the analytical techniques required to investigate cannabis, and help them understand the regulatory landscape in both Canada and the U.S. The partnership also plans to create a robust research enterprise surrounding cannabis and other areas of biotechnology.
